Metroidvania is a term that describes a type of game that originated first from Super Nintendo’s Super Metroid and Playstation’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Both games featured these maze-like open worlds before open worlds were a thing in video games. One of the greatest features in a Metroidvania-type game is that many areas of the world will be locked away from the player until the player earns a skill from a boss. Once the player earns the skill the player can use that skill to revisit the once unreachable areas of the map and as a result explore the world in ways that couldn’t be done when the player started the game.
A career can look a lot like a Metroidvania game where there are parts of a map that you can’t access because you lack the skill or confidence to explore those areas, but once you get more time in your career and slay a few bosses, you will get the skills you need to revisit areas of a craft/profession that you felt were inaccessible.
You might be an artist who learns new drawing skills and now approaches painting differently.
You might be a designer who learns how to perform user research so that you can become a UX designer.
You might be a chef who learns a new cooking technique and now you can start offering dishes you never thought you could offer.
In other words, sometimes you might not be ready to do something that you want to do but you over time learn the skills and get the experience needed to do that thing in ways that few (and most importantly yourself) could ever have imagined.
I encourage you to beat the boss, learn the skills, and revisit the parts of your map that you always wanted to explore.
